Carlsbad Police Officers Assn., I.U.P.A. Local #505 Members participated in Family STEM Night at Southeast New Mexico College, showing kids police drones and robots!

Carlsbad Police Department posted about the event, “Members of the Carlsbad Police Department Tech Team participated in the family STEM night at SENMC. We allowed students to operate the robot and showcased our drones. Thank you for allowing us to participate!”

The event gave kids a chance to learn about science, robotics, and police work. There were games and the kids got to touch the robots and drones that the officers brought to the event.

UC Davis defines STEM as “The NSF definition of STEM fields includes mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, computer and information sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences – psychology, economics, sociology, and political science.”

UC Davis states on their website that the four STEM subjects as defined by the National Research Council are:

  • Science is the study of the natural world, including the laws of nature associated with physics, chemistry, and biology and the treatment or application of facts, principles, concepts, or conventions associated with these disciplines.
  • Technology comprises the entire system of people and organizations, knowledge, processes, and devices that go into creating and operating technological artifacts, as well as the artifacts themselves.
  • Engineering is a body of knowledge about the design and creation of products and a process for solving problems. Engineering utilizes concepts in science and mathematics and technological tools.
  • Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships among quantities, numbers, and shapes. Mathematics includes theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics
