2024 Lawton Citizens Police Academy

In Oklahoma, I.U.P.A. Local Lawton Police Officers Assn., #24 Members taught community members in a multi-week Citizens Police Academy. Lawton Police Department posted the below photos on social media.

 

WEEK ONE

Lawton Police Department posted, “Thank you to Chief of Police James Smith, Lt. Whittington, and Sgt. Dimmitt for kicking off the 2024 Citizens Police Academy! The Citizens Police Academy offers citizens insight into how police officers perform their duties and how the Lawton Police Department serves this community. The success of the Lawton Police Department depends largely upon the cooperation and support it receives from the citizens we serve. Lt. Dye and Sgt. Puetz came out and explained how an officer on a bike is able to navigate through congested and crowded areas more easily than a car and faster than an officer on foot. Officers can arrive more quickly and secure the scene. Thank you to everyone that attended last night, we are excited for what’s in store the next 11 weeks!”

 

WEEK TWO

Lawton Police Department posted, “On week two of the Citizens Police Academy, Captain Henderson spoke about the Patrol Division, the backbone of any police department. The Lawton Police Department Patrol Division responsibilities are to answer calls of service and to investigate suspicious activity. Lt. Smith spoke and displayed some history of the Lawton Police Department and how we have evolved from the early 1900’s. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in last night’s class!”

 

WEEK THREE

Lawton Police Department posted, “On week three of the Citizens Police Academy, Captain Thorne spoke about the Criminal Investigations Division. The Lawton Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responsibilities are to thoroughly investigate crimes, to include Domestic Violence, Thefts, and Homicides, just to name a few. Detectives Molloy and Walters spoke about their responsibilities as Crime Scene Investigators. They are to thoroughly and accurately identify and preserve evidence from a crime scene. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in last night’s class!

 

WEEK FOUR

Lawton Police Department posted, “On week four of the Citizens Police Academy, Sgt. Paterson talked about the history of K-9’s and how they were implemented into Law Enforcement. Ofc. Adams gave a demonstration of just how powerful Yazzy’s nose really is. Sgt. Underwood and the Gang Intelligence Division is responsible for gathering intelligence, building relationships, and help deter gang ridden areas. He further explained what gangs we come across within our community. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in last night’s class!”

 

WEEK FIVE

Lawton Police Department posted, “On week five of the Citizens Police Academy, our participants heard from Sgt. Josey and Sgt. Alonzo with the Traffic Division. They spoke about various duties, responsibilities, and equipment they use on a regular basis. Captain Studebaker and Lt. Whittington spoke about our Crisis Intervention and Crisis Negotiation Teams and how they are utilized. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in last night’s class!”

 

WEEK SIX

Lawton Police Department posted, “On week six of the Citizens Police Academy, Sgt. Aguayo discussed the importance of situational awareness. The class participated in a live exercise simulating the stress a police officer will endure when it comes to clearing an unknown building. Thank you to everyone that attended and participated in last night’s class!”
